The Underground Press in America (1964-1968): Outlining an Alternative, the Envisioning of an UndergroundThis article examines, through a detailed study of editorials and statements of purpose published in American underground newspapers, the underground press newsworkers' visualization of their press as a communicative tool. This model departs from more traditional models of communicative interaction developed by communication scholars to describe the relationship between the press and its public. For the underground press newsworkers, their relationship with the audience was dynamic and symbiotic.
